Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu utilizes getting an opponent to the ground in order to utilize the leverage of ground fighting techniques such as submission holds involving joint-locks and choke-holds. Most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from their superior reach and powerful strikes, both are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground.

On the ground, physical strength can be offset or enhanced by a person experienced in BJJ who knows how to maximize force using mechanical strength instead of pure physical strength.
